Coconut sugar is a natural sweetener made from the sap of coconut palm flowers. The world’s largest producers of coconut sugar are Indonesia and Philippines.

According to the Philippine Food and Nutrition Research Institute, coconut sugar is much healthier than table sugar as it contains zinc, iron, calcium and potassium. But no one mentions that you’ll have to eat kilos of coconut sugar to get these nutrients in meaningful amounts! For example, recommended daily potassium intake for an adult is 4.7g. In order to get it you’ll need to eat about 90 teaspoons of coconut sugar per day!

Manufacturers of coconut sugar also claim that it has a low Glycemic index (which in simple words ranks carbs on how they affect your blood sugar level). Looks like a perfect choice? Fact #1: not all the tests held outside the Philippines prove its Glycemic index to be 35 –according to some sources, it’s more than 50 that is close to table sugar. Fact #2: Coconut sugar is not so sweet as table sugar and you can easily find yourself putting twice as much sweetener to your tea or coffee as you used to. And it can easily lead to weight gain, as coconut sugar has almost the same amount of calories as white sugar (1 teaspoon or 5 grams = 16-19 kcal)! So be careful when you start using products that are claimed to be healthier choices!
